Technique: painterly illustration · Estimated time: 5 hrs · Paint: interior acrylic-latex (typography) + Liquitex BASICS artist acrylic (illustration)
Painting Instructions
- Pencil the bowl as a large circle (~26" diameter inside chalk grid). Add the inner rim ellipse to show the bowl is 3/4 view.
- Base coat the bowl in CREAM (#F0EAD2), two coats. Let dry fully.
- Lightly pencil the food sections inside: brown rice (back-left), romaine (front), chicken stripes (top), beans cluster (right), avocado fan, tomatoes, onions, chips on top.
- Paint each ingredient block, starting from the BACK of the bowl forward (rice → romaine → proteins → veg → toppings). Each ingredient gets 2 thin coats.
- After base ingredients dry: GRILLED CHICKEN (#7A4A2E) for the chicken pieces, add darker brown grill marks. AVOCADO FLESH (#A8C76A) for avocado, darker green edges. TOMATO RED for tomatoes. CREAM for onions. GOLDEN CHIP (#E2A93E) for tortilla chips on top.
- Final pass: zigzag drizzles across the top — TERRACOTTA RUST (#C04920) chipotle and CREAM ranch. Use the back of a thin brush or a squeeze bottle technique for natural drizzle lines.
- Add small "H&D" mark on the front edge of the bowl in forest green.
★ Pro tip for this element
This is the most-photographed element on the wall — spend the time. If a section looks off, paint over it with cream after 24 hours and redo.
Common Acrylic Rules
| Rule | Detail |
| Surface prep | Lightly scuff with 220-grit, wipe clean, prime any bare spots with cream base if wood is too dark |
| Layers | TWO thin coats > one thick coat — every time |
| Dry time between coats | 15-20 min minimum (acrylic feels dry sooner but isn't) |
| Brush care | Rinse in water between colors, blot on rag. Never let paint dry in brush. |
| Mistakes | Wait 24 hrs, paint over with cream base, dry, redo |
| Final seal (whole mural, day 5) | Matte acrylic clear topcoat — protects from grease + cleaning |
